Attendance Works

Attendance WorksAttendance Works questions the actual rate of chronic absenteeism in U.S. schools. (Chronic absenteeism is defined as a student missing ten or more days of school.) The data is difficult to measure for a number of reasons, including the fact that absenteeism is reported at the end of the school year and the federal data is not released for another year and a half. An independent audit conducted by John Hopkins University discovered a discrepancy of two million absences compared to the federal absence count.

Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance

Big Cat Sanctuary AllianceThere are only about 200 white tigers left. In the wild, one white tiger occurs in every 10,000 births and they are often doomed because they cannot hide from their prey when hunting. In captivity, all white tigers are descendants of one tiger named Mohini, and a lot of inbreeding occurs. Zoos and sanctuaries have agreed to stop breeding white tigers, but private citizens who have “backyard cats” sometimes do. When they need rescuing, the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance steps in to send them to one of the sanctuaries in their network.
